What’s Included in Skilled Nursing?

Our company, Haven Home Health provides skilled nursing as one of it’s many services to clients. If you have looked for home health options before, odds are that you’ve seen many companies offer skilled nursing. But what is included in that?

What is skilled nursing?

Skilled nursing is a broad term that covers many individual services. Which service(s) you receive depends on your condition and your care plan. For example, someone who is recovering from surgery may need both rehabilitation nursing and medication management. They might also receive support with activities of daily living (ADL) while they recover. These all qualify as skilled nursing services.

Other services include:

  • Disease management
  • Rehabilitation nursing
  • In-home IV therapy
  • Wound care
  • Ostomy care
  • Continence care
  • After-hours care and support

It’s not limited to the services above either. One of the main defining features is that the service is performed by a Registered Nurse (RN). Your RN will work with your doctor and the other members of your healthcare team. Their goal is to execute your care plan to the best of their ability so you can stay at home and receive the care you need.

How do you know if you need it?

Most often, your doctor or other healthcare professional will recommend it if they feel it would be helpful to you. The services you receive will always come down to your needs and health goals. Skilled nursing is generally made part of the care plan when the services listed above are necessary, or if there are other services you will need that require an RN.

At Haven Home Health, skilled nursing is one of the main services we offer. Our other focus is on in-home physical, speech, and occupational therapy. Check out our Home Health page for more information. We take Medicare and Medicaid, and we’re in-network with several other major health insurance companies. You can go online to check Medicare’s coverage here. If you have any questions about your coverage or our services, feel free to give us a call at one of the numbers listed below.

Why Ownership Matters:

At Haven Home Health and Hospice, we are proud to be the last locally-owned, independent, and clinician-led provider of home-based care in our region. While that may sound like a simple fact, it’s actually a defining difference—one that matters deeply to the quality of care our patients receive every day. In recent years, private equity firms and large corporate healthcare chains have rapidly bought out home health and hospice providers across the country, including right here in our community. What we’ve seen in the aftermath is troubling: rapid turnover of staff, shrinking time spent with patients, and decisions driven more by profit margins than by compassion, dignity, and clinical excellence.

When ownership shifts from caregivers to corporations, priorities shift too.

We believe healthcare should never be treated like a commodity. That’s why we’ve remained committed to local, clinician-led ownership—because we answer to patients, not shareholders. Our leadership is hands-on, involved, and invested in every life we touch. We believe that meaningful care takes time, intention, and heart—and it starts with the people who make the decisions. As owners who are also licensed clinicians, we understand the weight of the responsibility we carry. Our patients are not numbers in a spreadsheet. They are parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends. And we believe they deserve the kind of care we’d want for our own families. We will continue to stand against the corporatization of healthcare, and we invite you to stand with us. Whether you’re a patient, a referral partner, or a member of the community, your trust makes it possible for us to preserve something rare and essential in today’s healthcare system: personalized, human-centered care. Because in the end, ownership isn’t just about who signs the papers—it’s about who shows up when it matters most.
